Applications for Grammar (Year 9) Music Scholarship 2026 are now closed. Applications for 2027/28 will be open in Summer-Autumn 2026.

For entry at 13+ students must be Grade 5 standard in at least one instrument.

MUSIC EXHIBITION INFORMATION

Where we are unable to offer a full Music Scholarship, we may be able to consider a Music Exhibition. This consists of:
• Full Music Exhibitioners receive free tuition in two instruments or one instrument and voice.
• Half Music Exhibitioners receive free tuition in either one instrument or voice.

Unless by special arrangement, all Scholars have their lessons in College with the visiting music teachers. Requests to have an external teacher should be made to the Director of Music.

Applicants who are successful in any of the scholarships or exhibitions offered would not only receive the financial benefit but would have the chance to develop fully their music skills in a growing and exciting Music Department. Students will take part in ensembles, recitals and concerts throughout the year, as well as progressing through the Associated Board, Trinity Guildhall and London College of Music grade system. They will be expected to widen their music experience and skills through the choral opportunities, as well as the curricular and extra-curricular education. Indeed, not only will these opportunities be available to them, but they will be expected to take a full and active part in the Department.

The College is looking to award scholarships not just to a high standard of attainment, but will be looking for musicianship, potential, commitment, and personality. The auditions, which take place annually in January, will involve various activities. The candidate should prepare a short recital programme of two pieces, which will show to the full their abilities of musicianship and technique on their first instrument/voice and one piece on their second instrument/voice. There will also be short tests in sight-reading, aural and theory, as well as a short interview.

Music Scholarship auditions are held in the Music School Recital Room. The practice rooms in the Music School can be used to warm up. Please bring along all your music and piano accompaniments. In addition to your instrumental work, if you have some singing experience, it would be helpful if you would bring a prepared song of your choice.

There will then be a short viva voce (question and answer) with the panel about your general musical experience, both instrumental and vocal and about your future plans. If you require an accompanist, please send copies of the piano scores two weeks prior to your audition date, or alternatively, you are welcome to provide your own accompanist on the day.

Please include letters of reference from current music tutor(s) with your application.

Candidates are welcome to contact the music office in advance for a free music consultation before the scholarship audition. Email: musicadmin@stedmundscollege.org

If you are an external applicant, you must complete a registration form to be considered for a scholarship. This can be found at: https://www.stedmundscollege.org/how-to-apply/how-to-register/
