High Performance Learning

HPL World Class Accredited and a Member of the Fellowship and Global Community of HPL Schools

Learning at St Edmund’s is underpinned by the High Performance Learning (HPL) framework, an evidenced-based approach to education, embraced by a growing number of world leading schools.

What is HPL?

High Performance Learning blends academic confidence and attainment with the development of robust personal values, attitudes, and attributes to educate students as a whole.

Developed by Professor Deborah Eyre, the HPL framework is built on research which explores how people think and learn. By providing every single child the opportunity to achieve academic success and to live a life full of opportunity and fulfilment, HPL creates ‘room at the top’ for more.

At St Edmund’s, HPL sits at the heart of an intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual education that creates self-assured young people, who are kind and caring, as well as astute problem-solvers and strategic thinkers.

High Performance Learning Accreditation

St Edmund’s was officially admitted to the Fellowship and Global Community of HPL Schools as an HPL World Class School as of May 2024. We are currently embedding HPL across our curriculum; a process that will lead to accreditation as a world class High Performance Learning School. As a world class school, we have joined The Fellowship and Global Community of HPL Schools (FGC), a network of forward-thinking, inspiring educators.

What does it mean to work in an HPL World Class School and be part of the Fellowship and Global Community?

  • We use a common framework language and philosophy, rooted in 40 years of Oxford research.
  • As an HPL International Research School we seek improvement through action research and reading.
  • We are members of an HPL Global network of Educational practice and research
  • All teachers are members of the HPL online community which provides regular opportunities in professional development and leadership.
  • All teachers can access in-house training on HPL centred practice and pedagogy and be involved in our HPL Research Hub

All our teachers can access the HPL Certification programme, at one of the following levels:

  • HPL Teacher – classroom based
  • Expert Teacher
  • Teacher Leader

What are the features that make an HPL School Different?

HPL believes successful students are made not born so the underpinning HPL philosophy is that schools should act accordingly. They should see every student as a potential high performer and they change their language and behaviour to reflect this.
