Course Outline

Geography is distinctive in that it occupies the middle ground between social sciences and natural sciences and to this end the Diploma Programme Geography course integrates both physical and human geography and ensures that students acquire elements of both scientific and socioeconomic methodologies. The course is designed to encourage the systematic and critical study of human experience and behaviour, physical and economic and social environments and the history and development of social and cultural institutions

Course Description

Core:
Patterns of change (populations in transition, disparities in wealth and development, patterns in environmental quality and sustainability, patterns in resource consumption.
Global interactions (in various forms)
Topics:
We will study three of the following:

  • Freshwater
  • Oceans and their coastal margins
  • Extreme environments
  • Hazards and disasters
  • Leisure sport, tourism
  • The geography of food and health
  • Urban environment.
Assessment

Paper 1 (1 hour 30 minutes) 25%

  • Syllabus content: Core theme
  • Section A: Students answer all short-answer questions, some will include data
  • Section B: Students answer one extended response question.

Paper 2 (1 hour 20 minutes) 35%

  • Syllabus content: Topics
  • Students answer two structured questions based on stimulus material, each selected from a different topic. For each theme there is a choice of two questions. Some stimulus material is included in the resources booklet.

Paper 3 (1 hour) 20%

  • Syllabus content: Global interactions
  • Students answer one of three essay questions.

Internal assessment 20%
Written report based on field work – Maximum 2500 words.
