EXAMINATION BOARD: OCR

This course is ideal for Computer Science students who are already at Level 3 and are looking for a more advanced understanding of computer science and are aiming to study Computer Science at University or aiming to work in the computing industry.

Computer Science is a practical subject and student will apply the academic principles learnt in the classroom to real-world systems and situations.

COURSE CONTENT IN RHETORIC I

The separate AS qualification splits into two sections: Computer Fundamental and Programming Techniques and Logical Methods.  The AS does not test the students ability to program.  Instead this course tests their understanding of a range of theory topics, which include the principles and understanding linked to programming, as well as topics such as hardware and software, networks, systems development cycles and implications of computer use.

Unit 1—Computer Fundamentals

  • The characteristics of contemporary processors;
  • Input, output and storage devices;
  • Software and software development
  • Programming;
  • Exchanging data;
  • Data types, data structures and algorithms;
  • Legal, moral, ethical and cultural issues.

Unit 2—Algorithms and problem solving

  • Elements of computational thinking;
  • Problem solving and programming;
  • Algorithms.

COURSE CONTENT IN RHETORIC II

Unit 1 and 2 are the same as Rhetoric I but at a more in-depth level.

Unit  3  – Programming Project

  • Analysis of the problem;
  • Design of the solution;
  • Developing the solution;
  • Evaluation.

KEY SKILLS

  • This course will develop the students ability to think creatively, innovatively, analytically, logically and critically.
  • Apply skills with a greater understanding of computing (including programming) in a range of contexts to solve problems.
  • See relationships between different aspects of the subject.
  • Be aware of emerging technologies and appreciate their potential, including the impact they may have on our society.

ASSESSMENT

The A Level computer Science is assessed through two examinations, each worth 40% and a project worth 20%.

ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES

  • Additional programming classes are available for students to experiment with code and learn new programming languages. Rhetoric II students also have the opportunity to help run programming classes for younger students.
  • We have excellent links with Educational IT/Computer resource suppliers and students have the opportunity to experience some of the latest software and equipment available.
  • Students have had the opportunity to take residential courses sponsored by companies like GCHQ.

HIGHER EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT

Students are likely to progress to University but are also well equipped for a computing orientated L4 Advanced Apprenticeship and employment.
