Performing Arts

The Music School is a vibrant and lively area of the College. Music is part of the curriculum as St Edmund’s College but it is through our co-curricular activities programme that the Music Department comes alive.

The Schola Cantorum, our College choir of around 80 members, sing at special Masses such as our St Edmund’s Day Celebrations, the Lenten concert and lead the annual Carol Service. The Schola has also sung at Canterbury Cathedral and Westminster Cathedral. A Chapel Choir also operates on Sundays in term time. Our Chamber Choir is much in demand to sing at St Edmund’s functions such as weddings, funerals and balls. As well as Schola and Chamber Choir we have eight ensembles including Orchestra, Jazz Band, Concert Band, Junior Strings, Flute, Saxophones and Guitars.  These ensembles all have the opportunity to perform at half termly recital evenings where friends and family are welcome to see them perform.
We offer a full range of instrumental lessons given by our dedicated peripatetic team of 21 teachers including voice, strings, brass, woodwind (including Saxophone), percussion, guitar, piano, harpsichord and organ. Currently, we teach more than 200 music lessons and 40 LAMDA or LAMDA Musical Theatre tutorials each week.

We are an examination centre for four Boards: the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, Trinity Guildhall Examination Board, London College of Music (music theatre and pop vocals) and London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). Students also sit other Boards’ examinations via their tutors, including Rock School (guitar, drums).

All music practice rooms are fitted with a piano and the Recital room has a Concert Grand. The Technology Suite is equipped with PCs, running Sibelius 7.

In addition to these music activities, the Music School works closely with the Drama department and again through our activities programme is able to offer LAMDA and Musical Theatre tuition.  We currently teach over 40 lessons each week.  We hold termly LAMDA performance evenings giving the students the opportunity to show friends and family their work over the term which is generally their examination pieces.

A College Musical Production is performed annually and the production of the Spectacular Les Miserables was our most recent production.  Hairspray, Singin’ in the Rain, Half a Sixpence and Madness musical ‘Our House’ have also been recent productions.  To ensure that our students have every opportunity to understand the world of theatre we have for the last four years using the Broxbourne Civic Hall giving all students be it, performers or backstage, a true theatre experience.  Recent productions have been huge successes drawing audiences of over 1,000 on the three nights.

Our activities program also gives students the opportunity to produce small plays each year with their most recent play being One Man Two Guvnors.

All productions also give our musicians an opportunity to perform and accompany these productions where necessary.
