Religious life

As the oldest Catholic school in England, prayer and reflection underpin all we do, but our values are universal.

We’re proud of our Catholic history and how this shapes the core aims and values that sit at the heart of a St Ed’s education.

We deliver a Christ-centred education, and warmly welcome pupils from various faiths and backgrounds into our diverse community. Our school is a place brimming with love, hope and joy, where equality reigns and everyone plays a valuable role.

Building on our Catholic heritage, making prayer, worship and liturgy a central part of our lives and our community, we prepare our students to make their way in the world while making a difference to society.

Pastoral and liturgical themes run through our teaching and prayer and coincide with the Church year calendar. In House assemblies, we ask the children to focus on a pastoral theme which is returned to at the end of the week at our Celebration and Performing Arts Assembly. Once a week we have a liturgical assembly, led by the Head of the Prep and the Chaplaincy Team. This places scripture and prayer at the heart of all that we do and always conclude with a hymn.

Chaplaincy

Father Peter Lyness, our Priest-in-Residence delivers Mass in the St Hugh’s Chapel and guides us all with prayers and readings.

Through our links with the Disciples of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary based in Madrid, one seminarian supports all at the College and Prep each year. This includes supporting Prep children in the classroom with religious education.

Our Chaplaincy team, a group of children guided and supported by staff, consider and write prayers for our assemblies.

Thinking of others, service and leadership in our community is integral to daily life at the Prep. Each term House Captains select a charity to support. This can be local, national or international and through events – such as cake sale, sponsored runs and spelling bees – all children experience helping others by raising money.

Prayer

Each day is punctuated by opportunities for prayer.

For example, at the beginning and end of each day and before lunch. Prayer books are maintained in each classroom and pupils children regularly write prayers for issues they care about.

We are blessed to have our own chapel which is always open to children and parents for quiet moments of prayer and reflection.

Mass is celebrated each Thursday afternoon in St Hugh’s Chapel, which is part of the Prep school. On Feast Days and special occasions, Mass is celebrated in the stunning Pugin Chapel. Parents are always welcome to join Masses but should advise the Prep Office of their intention to do so.

The Morning Offering

My Lord,I offer You this day, all that I may do, or think, or say,And offer it for what was done on earth by Jesus Christ,

Thy Son. Help me, O Lord, in my school work today.

Help me in this, O Lord, for I wish to serve

You in success and in failure.

Amen.

Saint Edmund, pray for us.

Prayer before meals

Bless us O Lord As we sit together.

Bless the food we eat today.

Bless the hands that made the food.

Bless us O Lord.

Amen

Evening Prayer

God our Father I come to say

Thank you for your love today.

Thank you for my family

And all the friends you give to me.

Guide me in the dark of night

And in the morning send light.

Amen

We’re a modern, forward-thinking school; proud of our academic standing, but grades are not our sole focus. At St Edmund’s, the spiritual, academic, pastoral and co-curricular are of equal value.
