St Edmund’s Prep U7’s Tag Rugby ‘A’

Hormead U7’s Tag Rugby ‘A’

9

The under 7 team consisting of all Form 2’s enjoyed a game of tag rugby against a mixed Year 2&3 team from Hormead. Despite a spirited performance they lost by six tries to nine as the bigger and more experienced opponents were very well drilled in the art of tag rugby. However, at the end of the game the result was forgotten by everyone when we retired to the refectory for sausage, chips and beans! The Prep School tries were scored by Jack Davies, Bella Uzoka, Natasha Allmark, Mackenzie Mace and Hazar Matur.

St Joseph’s In The Park U11’s Rugby ‘A’

The Prep school enjoyed a comfortable afternoon against their local neighbours. Although the rugby was at times chaotic and the fact that St Joseph’s didn’t get near the Prep try line the Prep ran out eventual 19-0 winners. However the Prep spurned numerous chances to add to the final score when boys were caught holding on to the ball for too long and not making use of their team mates. The tries were scored by Morgan Davies and George Demosthenous who scored two. Dylan Cusack converted two of the three tries.

After a lacklustre start the Prep School found themselves 14-0 behind but following a stern talking to they soon found their game and managed to halve the deficit just before half time when Dylan Cusack scored and converted his own try. Early in the second half the Prep School managed to tie the scores when Max Fraser crashed over from short range and again Dylan Cusack converted. Despite being in the ascendancy, the Prep School failed to make their dominance pay off and squandered a great number of chances as the game finished in a draw.

Hot on the heels of their very impressive performance against Loyola, the under 9s then travelled to St Joseph’s in the Park with high expectancy and they weren’t to disappoint. Although the game was very stop start they managed to record a convincing victory with tries from Ben Kasperczak, Callum McGurk, Harry Moore (2) and James Rose. When a number of the St Joseph’s players couldn’t play on Lucian Wou Smith, Ben Kasperczak and Jacob Brown ended up playing for the other team and Jacob was their man of the match! He even scored one of their tries.

Duncombe U7’s Tag Rugby ‘A’

The St Edmund’s Prep U7’s got off to a flying start against Duncombe with Jack Davies making a speedy start and scoring the first of many tries on the day.  The try helped the Prep side off to the start they needed, then maintaining the lead throughout.  Hazur Matur captained the side very well and was of great support to Liam Mays, also scoring and the whole side who produced an impressive win.  The most outstanding try was scored by Natasha Allmark who ran the entire length of the pitch before putting the ball firmly down behind the line.  Duncombe however put in a stalwart performance and kept up with the pace only trailing by two tries at the last.  A good standard of pass and move, the U7’s really made an impression.

Loyola U11’s Rugby ‘A’

The spectators on the touch line were treated to a fantastic game of rugby as both teams gave their all. With both teams playing attacking rugby and trying to off load the ball at every opportunity both defences had to be at their best. And this was indeed the case because as half time approached the scores were 0-0. However as the half came to an end St Edmund’s pressure paid off when Phoenix Healy charged down an attempted Loyola clearing kick, gathered the ball and scored a try which Dylan Cusack then converted. The second half continues in the same vain with both teams again playing lots of exciting attacking rugby. Despite much Loyola pressure on their own line St Edmund’s kept their visitors out and then as the game was coming to an end Edward Hanley scored a great try in the corner following some excellent offloading and support running by Dylan Cusack, Phoenix Healy, George Demosthenous and Morgan Davies. A thoroughly well deserved win.

Loyola U9’s Rugby ‘A’

10

These teams put in a great deal of effort in attack and defence in this game and in the end a draw was a fair result. Loyola put the Prep School under some early pressure but the defence lead by Callum, Lucian and James Rose held strong. Loyola took the lead just before half time but the Prep responded after the break when Jonathan Fry finished off a good move which involved many of the team. The Prep then went into the lead when Callum McGurk added another try. Both teams had further chances to score but the defences were again too hard to break down. Towards the end though Loyola did equalise after a good run by one of their backs but all those in attendance agreed that both teams deserved something from the game.

Duncombe U11’s Rugby ‘A’

When these two teams played before half term it was a closer encounter and this game was exactly the same. St Edmund’s went ahead when Henry Warburton pounced on a Duncombe error on their try line to score a try. Duncombe came back hard but the Prep School defence remained defiant until just before half time. The second half saw Duncombe dominate early and they extended their lead with another try and this time the conversion was successful. The Prep School team didn’t let their heads drop though and put together many excellent phases of rugby and were rewarded when Phoenix Healy finished off a fine move in the corner. The pressure was then on captain Dylan Cusack to convert the try which he duly did to tie the scores at 12-12 and this is how it remained to the end.

Duncombe U9’s Rugby ‘A’

10

Despite the initial disappointment when their opponents arrived to play touch rugby the U9s gave a spirited performance in a format they were again not used to, especially the 2 hand tackling. Both teams also struggled with the 6 tackle and turn over rule and this made for a stop start game which Duncombe edged by two tries to one.

St Mary’s U9’s Tag Rugby ‘A’

The Prep School boys played a game of tag rugby for their first outing of the new season and an entertaining encounter ensued. Although they found it difficult to remove their opponents tags and to contain themselves from tackling their opponents they had an enjoyable afternoon despite the final result.

The U7’s were in confident mood for their first tag rugby fixture.  Jack Davies was everywhere and must have covered every blade of grass!  He tackled the opposition, one after the next, ferociously!  Hazar Matur scored three, Jack Davies scored two and Mackenzie Mace added one more.  Natasha Allmark also scored an impressive try as she ran the ball over the try line from her own half.

Duncombe U11’s Rugby ‘A’

The Prep School came up against a physical and well organised team from Duncombe and suffered a 10-0 defeat. Although there were some notable performances from Max Fraser and Edward Hanley it was a good indicator for the team as to the quality of the teams they would be facing throughout the season.

Kingshott U11’s Rugby ‘A’

The Rugby Squad opened their season with a hard fought game against a very physical Kingshott team. Despite some good early possession they failed put any points on the board and soon found themselves behind to some well taken tries. However they never let their heads drop and they spent most of the second half camped near the opposition try line but just couldn’t penetrate the Kingshott defence.

Wednesday 16th November

St Edmund’s Prep Rugby U11’s A @ Bancrofts Tournament

On Wednesday 16th November, while the rest of the school were celebrating the Feast Of St Edmund, the Prep u11 rugby team travelled to Bancroft’s Schools’ Annual Rugby Tournament. Throughout the day they played 6 games and with a team consisting of mainly Form 5 boys and even one Form 4 boy they found playing against some much bigger boys difficult. They lost games to Brentwood, Bancroft A, Arnold and St Cedd’s and despite having the majority of the possession in their opponents 22 they lost a close game to Loyola. Their one victory came against the Bancroft Barbarians when late in the game, after being camped on the oppositions try line for most of the match, full back Edward Hanley ran a beautiful line to score the winning try. Despite the losses the team should be proud of their efforts as many of the coaches and referees who watched them play commented and praised them on the style of running rugby they were trying to play.

Wednesday 14th September

St Edmund’s Prep U10’s Rugby ‘A’ @ Oratory Cardinals Cup

On Wednesday 14th September the U10 Rugby team travelled to the Oratory School near Reading for their annual Rugby tournament. Played in glorious sunshine the team played 5 matches against teams from The Oratory School, St Benedicts, Caldicott School, St George’s Weybridge and Thorpe House School.  The first game ended in a 10-10 draw against our hosts with Phoenix Healy scoring a brace of tries. The next 3 game ended in defeat by a single try each time with Phoenix Healy (2), Joshua Charsley and Max Fraser (4) scoring our tries. The final game also ended in a 5- 15 defeat with Phoenix Healy again scoring our try. Other notable performances on the day came from Finbar O’Neill whose ferocious tackling was noted by many of the other coaches and referees and from Harvey Aylott who despite having never played rugby before showed lots of commitment and potential.
