St Edmund’s Prep U11’s Football ‘A’ @ Wix County Finals |
|
Won 0, Drew 0, Lost 2 The boys’ first game started brightly, with the boys taking a one goal lead into half time through Gus Lawrence. The second half, however, saw the opposition attack much more directly and after sending several long balls into our box, a chance was finished off to level the scores. A similar goal was scored soon after to condemn us to a narrow first defeat. In the second game of fifteen minutes each way, with little rest and nursing a few injuries, our boys again did very well to establish a one goal lead, taken impressively by George Demosthenous, and hold it to half time. Unfortunately, in the second half the opposition again applied lots of pressure and managed to score two goals despite some heroic goalkeeping by Dylan Cusack. Although we suffered two narrow defeats, the boys should be commended for reaching these tough later stages of the competition, especially as many of the team were playing one year group ahead of themselves. Well done boys, you should be very proud of your efforts! |

Won 0, Drew 1, Lost 3 After drawing their first game against Chigwell school 0-0, the boys then lost their next game, 1-0, to the eventual winners, St Aubyns despite several outstanding saves from our young goalkeeper Joshua Charsley. In a must-win game against Loyola to finish the group stages, our boys scored a superb opener when Thomas Christie spun and finished with a well-taken goal after a corner. Loyola hit back strongly though and scored two more goals to win the match, 2-1, in the closing stages. The last match was against a good side from Daiglen who won 2-0. |

The U7’s Football Team were in fine form again with another super display of attacking football. Hazar Matur opened the scoring with a goal after a great run down the flank. Jack Davies, majestic in his role as a midfield enforcer and playmaker, scored two fantastic goals showing superb balance and dribbling skills en route. Mackenzie Mace also added a brace of goals in his predatory role as the lone striker. However, it was Junior ‘JooJooBerry’ Nyanteki-Owusu that stole the show with a long range thunderbolt of a shot, sending the crowd into scenes of joyous (and noisy) adulation! Well done to all players involved. |

St Edmund’s Prep U11’s Football ‘A’ @ ESFA County Finals |
|
The A team were joined in their group, on a bitterly cold winter morning, by the district winners of St Albans- Garden Fields and the district winners of Royston- Greneway. The first match against, the eventual winners, Garden Fields was a very close encounter and ended in a 0-0 draw. We had to rely on some last-ditch defending in the first half as Dylan Cusack, Edward Hanley and Matthew Kiwanuka combined determinedly to clear two goalbound shots from our goal line. Then, in the second half Gus Lawrence was only inches away from connecting with a cross that would have surely won the match after making a great break from midfield. The second match was against Greneway, after a close first half where we had hit the post after a good run by George Demosthenous, we set up after half time in a more attacking formation. Unfortunately, whilst searching for the goal that would have sealed us a place in the final, we conceded two goals on the break and ended up losing 2-0. Fine margins decide games in these close matches and on this occasion the boys were quite unlucky. |

St Edmund’s Prep B enjoyed a more than comfortable win against St Joseph’s in the Park B in a one sided game. Straight from the kick off the Prep opened the scoring when Freddie Knight scored the first of his three goals in the game. Further goals before half time were scored by Alvaro Rodriguez, Hugo Abramson and Freddie Knight. In the second half Hugo Abramson added another to his tally, as did Freddie Knight. Joseph Walton got on the score sheet as did first half goalkeeper Will James. The Prep School continued to press for more goals and hit the post on three occasions and the St Joseph’s goalkeeper made a number of very good saves. Towards the end of the game though he was unable to prevent Jack Ratledge from scoring his first ever goal for the school team. |

St Edmund’s Prep U11’s Football ‘A’ @ Wix Trophy |
|
On Wednesday 23rd November, our U11’s football team travelled once more to Howe Green to take part in another district qualifier. After winning the ESFA district finals, our boys were competing to become the district winners of the Wix Trophy. They were successful and probably played even better than the last time, winning another trophy and qualifying for the County Finals of the Wix Trophy. The first match was won 2-0 against Thorley Hill with Gus Lawrence scoring a crackerjack from long-range and with George Demosthenous also getting himself on the scoresheet. Howe Green were the next opponents and they were beaten 4-0, with Morgan Davies scoring twice (one of them was possibly goal of the tournament as it completed a great flowing move that started from our goalkeeper), George Demosthenous scoring once and Gus Lawrence adding the other. We then beat St Andrew’s 1-0, with Gus Lawrence again finishing well to score our goal, before a thrilling match against a very good Northgate saw us come from one goal down to win 3-2. George Demosthenous, Morgan Davies and Gus Lawrence got our goals. The final match was lost 0-1 to the runners’ up, St Joseph’s RC, although by then we were victorious and completely exhausted. Well done boys, another medal to add to your collections! |

The U9’s football team came up against a stronger and more determined team from Duncombe and lost by 3 goals to 1. The Duncombe team were quick to adjust to the underfoot conditions and took an early lead when their captain scored from distance. They increased their lead before half time from the penalty spot. Shortly after the second half began they were awarded another penalty which they converted. The Prep School then started to get into the game and scored when James Rose scored with a long range shot. He almost did it again moments later only for an opposing player to block it on the line with his hand. Unfortunately, the Duncombe goalkeeper made a great save from the resulting penalty. The Prep continued to create chances to score but missed a number of gilt edged opportunities when one on one with the goalkeeper. |

St Edmund’s Prep U9’s team gave a great performance to win by a large margin, but it was their performance that was most pleasing. Joshua Charsley, captain fantastic, scored five super goals to help his team to victory. Alejandro Rodriguez, Thomas Lewy and James Rose also scored, but Callum McGurk took all the plaudits after scoring with a thunderbolt of a shot from long range. Thomas Christie was excellent in a lone striker role, making several intelligent runs off the back of the defence and showing some silky skills when in possession. Whilst the impressive James Rose played a number of incisive through balls and switch balls to create scoring opportunities. |

Duncombe then scored just before half time and added another two after half time. James Boyling surprised himself and found a new role as a central defender, not being afraid to make at least two tackles preventing the loss from getting further out of hand. Harrison Cooke and Bryn Couser also worked tirelessly down the line tracking back to support the defensive line. Robert Cook and Jack Ratledge combined to score an excellent goal in the second half. A disappointing score line, but the whole team worked hard on the day and showed a great deal of character. |

Our U9’s team did create a number of chances to score and started to pass and move with more fluency. However, Kingshott scored one goal in the first half and a further two in the second half as they began to overpower our team a little. Callum McGurk was excellent in midfield and defended with vigour. |

St Edmund’s Prep U10’s Football ‘A’ @ Kingshott Tournament |
|
The U10’s played very well all afternoon and passed the ball around confidently. Unfortunately, a combination of penalty shootouts to decide matches and the size of the goals meant that our final position did not really reflect how well we had played. Our first game against Heath Mount ended 0-0, despite dominating and creating several excellent goalscoring chances. Unfortunately, we lost the match on penalties. We then drew 2-2 against Westbrook Hay after another good performance, with the opposition equalising with the last kick of the match from a thunderous free kick from long range. Morgan Davies and Phoenix Healy were our scorers. We won this deciding penalty shoot-out, but did not make the top group despite all 3 teams being level on points and goal difference. This was a real shame as our U9’s A team were clearly superior in the way that they played, but could not quite convert their many chances. We drew our next match 0-0 versus Kingshott and then lost on penalties before beating St Joseph’s in The Park 5-0. Matthew Kiwanuka, Josh Brody (x2), Phoenix Healy and Morgan Davies scored our goals in the final match. |

The U11’s football ‘A’ team won 2, lost 2 and drew one of their games at the Kingshott Tournament. After narrowly losing the first game to Heath Mount, our boys were extremely unlucky not to score against their next opponents, Kimbolton, with George Demosthenous going very close towards the end. This game ended 0-0. The final game of the group was against the eventual finalists Edge Grove. Their superior passing and excellent understanding of how to switch play was a pleasure to watch and their 3-0 victory was well warranted. We won our next two games by three goals to nil against Kingshott and Kimbolton again. George Demosthenous scored five and Joshua Brody claimed the other. Morgan Davies was exceptional as a lone striker and his lay-offs to bring others into play were excellent. Dylan Cusack also caught the eye in goal and was in great form. |

The U11’s football A team were victorious in this County Cup qualifier that awarded them the accolade of becoming district champions 2011! A 2-0 victory against St Joseph’s RC followed thanks to a brace by George Demosthenous and then a 5-1 victory against last year’s winners Northgate with George Demosthenous (2), Phoenix Healy, Joshua Brody and Morgan Davies all adding their names to the score sheet. This set up a tense match against the tournament’s other unbeaten team, St Andrew’s. Some excellent football early on saw our boys take the lead with a well-taken goal by George Demosthenous. However, St Andrew’s battled back with a long range strike to level the game. However, our boys dominated the rest of the game to ensure the game finished as a draw. This was enough to win the tournament and qualify for the County Cup as Bishops Stortford’s representatives at the County Cup. An excellent achievement, well done! |

We will continue to work on our positioning when not in possession of the ball, but this was a good start to the season. Well done. |
