International Students

The International Department

The International Department promotes the welfare and success of students from overseas. International students at St Edmund's have a fine reputation for high academic achievement and personal endeavour.

The International Department will ensure that your child's academic and pastoral needs are assessed and supported throughout their career at the College. International students are integrated into every aspect of life at St Edmund's, follow a full curriculum and take advantage of free English language teaching and support as required.

English Language Teaching

Once admitted to the College, your child will receive intensive teaching in English as a Second language during their normal school timetable. Students will take the following examinations and specialist preparation classes are provided:

  • Cambridge ESOL examinations
  • City & Guilds ESOL qualifications
  • Cambridge IGCSE in English as a Second Language
  • Cambridge IELTS University Entrance Test

First Language Examinations

International students are encouraged to take mother tongue GCSE and A Level Examinations whenever this is possible.

Teaching Staff

The Director and her Deputy are both experienced fully-qualified teachers who have specialised in teaching English as a Second Language. They are both available each day to offer advice and assistance to international students on all aspects of their studies and College life.

Facilities

The Department has extensive, modern teaching resources and a colourful, welcoming classroom located on the ground floor of the main building. There is also a dedicated Media Centre for the sole use of international students. It has eight Internet terminals and a wealth of self-access learning material.

International Boarding

International boarders adopt English as their main language of communication and integrate with the day students and boarders of other nationalities. International students below Sixth Form share study bedrooms with students of a similar age who do not speak the same language.

Advice and Services

The Department offers advice on visa issues and a 24-hour emergency help line for the use of students and parents. The Director and Deputy act as mentors to the students throughout their career and offer independent support and counselling as required.
