Visual and performing arts

At St Edmund’s Prep, a breadth of visual and performing arts opportunities beyond the curriculum ensure all pupils can pursue their creative talents in art, drama, dance or music.

Discover some of the exceptional activities and clubs on offer…

Dance

In addition to Dance as part of our curriculum, we offer additional opportunities inluding our popular breaktime ballet club (Forms 1 – 2).

Dance performance opportunities include our summer musical, annual Inter-House Dance Competition and  Pre-Prep Performance, as well as our weekly Performing Arts Assemblies.

Drama

In addition to drama as part of our curriculum, a specialist drama teacher leads the following opportunities:

  • Drama Club
  • Two after-school Speech and Drama LAMDA clubs (Forms 3-4 and 5-6)

Pupils are invited to perform LAMDA pieces at recitals and encouraged to join in our annual Inter-House Drama and Poetry Competitions and weekly Celebration Assemblies.

Music

We share a team of 15 experienced Visiting Music Teachers (VMTs) with the College. Depending on age, instrument lessons are available in:

  • Voice
  • Piano
  • Recorder
  • Guitar
  • Drums
  • Many standard orchestral instruments

At the discretion of their music teacher, children enter for ABRSM and other examinations.

Additional co-curricular activities include:

  • Young Voices
  • Musical theatre
  • College orchestra (for advanced instrumentalists in Form 6)

Children also sing together in Assemblies, Masses, and at events, some held in the College Chapel (e.g. Service of Carols and Readings and the Easter Story) and some in other venues (the Nativity, Pre-Prep Performance and our Prep annual production).

Prep Concerts and our Pre-Prep Performance offer instrumentalists and singers opportunities to perform solo. Pupils are also keen to volunteer for our weekly Celebration Assemblies.

We enjoy strong links with the College Music Department. In Year 6, there is a competition for Music Scholarships and Exhibitions.

Visual art

Through Art we nurture confidence and self-belief. Beyond the classroom, we offer art clubs, organise exhibitions to showcase work and participate in local art exhibitions.

It is our aim that children learn to express themselves confidently and creatively through the Performing Arts.
Specialist teachers and excellent facilities - including a specialist art room, dance studio and outdoor amphitheatre - enhance the breadth of opportunities on offer.
